TRANSFORMING THE MAINE ROCKWEED COALITON

Scope and Context

Maine Rockweed Coalition is a platinum seal 501c3 nonprofit focused on conserving intertidal marine habitat, especially rockweed, along the coast of Downeast Maine. The coalition works through science research and education, community events, and legal advocacy to protect the rockweed forests that support their fisheries, wildlife, and local coastal communities.

The purpose of my project was to develop a clearer, more engaging website for the MRC that highlights the ecological significance of rockweed, clarifies its mission, and highlights existing opportunities for Downeast Maine communities to get involved.

Demographics

The MRC website mainly serves coastal landowners, educators, students, scientists, and outside supporters seeking information or involvement.

Local online users are often younger residents, teachers, and partners looking for events, legal updates, or teaching materials.

Some key groups (older residents, low-income households, and some tribal members) may rely more on in-person contact or print than on the website.

Assets

Sustained commitment and expertise shown through community oriented events.

Deep legal and policy knowledge shown through sustained, precedent-setting advocacy.

Enduring local partnerships with ongoing collaboration with landowners, fishermen, and allies.

Needs

Improved clarity and storytelling around the MRC’s mission and rockweed’s importance

Greater visibility and structure for the MRC’s existing opportunities to get involved

Stronger online connection and engagement supported through more interactive website features
